Course Overview

This two-day, highly interactive course helps Principal Contractor Representatives (PC Reps), Principal Contractor Site Managers (PCSMs) and Project Managers understand the National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) Supplier Requirements (SRs) that apply to their role. It is not a lecture: expect plenty of questions, real-world scenarios, group discussion and a homework task to present on day 2.

Under version 2 of the SR163.11 appointment form, a PC Rep must provide evidence of training on NGET Supplier Requirement Procedures, and confirm they have access to them. This course is designed to help meet that requirement. Delegates come away knowing what each SR requires, how the SRs fit together on a live project, and what NGET expects from the Principal Contractor on site.

How the course works

The course is built around taking part. Delegates learn by questioning, discussing and applying the Supplier Requirements, not just by listening to them.

Lots of questions: you’ll be questioned throughout, and you’re encouraged to bring your own questions from site.
Scenarios: you’ll work through realistic NGET project scenarios in groups, applying the SRs to the kinds of situations a PC Rep faces on site.
Homework on day 1: at the end of the first day, each delegate is given a task to prepare overnight.
Presentation on day 2: you’ll present your findings to the group. This builds confidence in explaining the SRs, which is a skill PC Reps use every day with subcontractors, the Client Representative and NGET.

The approach also prepares you for the interviews and competence reviews that many Principal Contractors use as part of the SR163.11 nomination process.

understand the PC Rep / PCSM’s responsibilities under SR/163 and CDM 2015
identify how the SRs apply at each stage of an NGET project, from design and programme through construction, commissioning and handover
recognise the documentation, assurance and quality evidence NGET expects from the Principal Contractor
understand what is needed for an SR163.11 v2 nomination

How this course fits SR163.11 v2

The SR163.11 v2 form lists 10 minimum prerequisites. This course supports prerequisite 8: training on NGET Supplier Requirement Procedures. You will also need the following:

Prerequisite 1, accredited Impressed Voltage training: EUSR Impressed Voltage for Managers & SR/234 Overview, or the version with IVDE (ECP/EAP) training
Prerequisite 2, valid Competent Person accreditation: Competent Person NSI6 and NSI8 Full
Prerequisite 3, CDM competence: CITB SMSTS and IOSH, or NEBOSH
Prerequisite 4, Temporary Works: CITB TWCTC
Prerequisite 5, Environmental and waste management: CITB SEATS
Prerequisite 6, HSG47 including the live substation module: EUSR HSG47 – HV Substations

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this course meet the SR163.11 Supplier Requirements prerequisite?

It is designed to support prerequisite 8 on the SR163.11 v2 form: training on NGET Supplier Requirement Procedures. The Principal Contractor still signs off the individual's competence on the appointment form.

What is the course format?

It is highly interactive, with lots of questions, scenario-based group exercises and discussion, plus the day 2 presentation.

Is there homework?

Yes. At the end of day 1, you'll be given a task to prepare overnight and present to the group on day 2. Plan to spend some time on it in the evening.

Does it cover NGET Technical Specifications?

No. Training on NGET Technical Specifications is a new requirement in SR163.11 v2, and we are currently developing training to support it.

Does it cover SR/234 Impressed Voltage?

SR/234 is covered in depth on our EUSR Impressed Voltage for Managers & SR/234 Overview course. That course also meets the SR163.11 requirement for accredited IV training.

Is this course only for substation work?

No. SR163.11 applies to all NGET capital plan works in a CDM-controlled area, inside or outside a substation, including overhead line works.
