Course Content

This course provides the practical skills and technical knowledge required for water service layer operations. Content is aligned with the CABWI qualification specification and may follow one of two pathways:

Core Units (Common to All Pathways)

  • Creating an efficient and effective working environment in utilities network construction
  • Maintaining a safe and secure site environment in water network construction
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
  • Installing site equipment for safe utilities operations
  • Locating and avoiding supply apparatus
  • Excavating and maintaining holes and trenches

Self-Lay Pathway Specific Units

  • Operating powered tools and equipment for routine and predictable tasks
  • Jointing materials by mechanical means
  • Installing water services up to 50mm nominal bore or 63mm polyethylene

Distribution Pathway Specific Units

  • Installing equipment for safe working on highways
  • Additional practical units may include:
    • Excavation and pavement reinstatement
    • Jointing materials by electrofusion processes
    • Restoring water network components to operational condition
