The National Grid Persons Substation course is a 1 day course held only at Eakring in Nottinghamshire and provides essential training for individuals who need access to high-voltage substations, focusing on safety, hazard awareness, and compliance with National Grid rules.

Who should Attend This Course

This one-day course is designed for individuals seeking to work or access within a National Grid substation environment, particularly where they are not carrying out electrical work but still need to understand the hazards and safety controls. For example:

  • Contractor employees working on National Grid sites
  • Individuals requiring substation access authorisation
  • Personnel involved in substation operations and maintenance

To be eligible for National Grid Person Substations, you will need to hold a Health & Safety Authorisation (we can also offer these) such as:

What To Have With You To Attend The Course

Photo ID – such as Passport or Driving Licence

Flame Retardant Overalls or two piece, gloves, safety glasses, Hard Hat and Flarme Retardant HI Vis (if overalls or two piece not Flame Retardant) and Safety Boots with laces, toe protection and mid sole protection.

Assessment

Candidates are assessed through a two-part process: an Computer Based Training covering substation safety and the dangers of impressed voltage, and a practical health and safety assessment. Both the theory and practical components must be passed, and delegates must bring their own PPE for the hands-on evaluation.

Course Content

This course consists of classroom training on basic substation equipment, hazards in substation environments and NG Safety Rules, this course also involves Computer Based Training (CBT) on underpinning substation knowledge and on the dangers of impressed voltage

Key elements of this training include:

  • Electrical safety principles: understanding high-voltage risks, electric shock, and arc flash
  • Substation environment: layouts and equipment such as transformers and switchgear
  • Hazard awareness: recognising electrical, mechanical, and environmental risks
  • Safe access procedures: entry permissions, permits, and safe distances
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): correct selection and use of safety gear
  • Emergency response: actions for incidents like fire, shock, or equipment failure
  • Rules and responsibilities: compliance with National Grid safety standards, authorisations and roles

By the end of the course, participants can safely enter substations, recognise hazards, and follow NGET working practices.
