Course Content

This course provides the technical knowledge and practical skills required for safe and compliant water mains operations. Content is aligned with CABWI qualification specifications and may follow one of two pathways:

Core Units (Common to All Pathways)

  • Creating an efficient and effective working environment in utilities network construction
  • Maintaining a safe and secure site environment in water network construction
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
  • Installing site equipment for safe utilities operations
  • Locating and avoiding supply apparatus
  • Excavating and maintaining holes and trenches
  • Operating powered tools and equipment for routine and predictable tasks
  • Self-Lay Pathway Specific Units

Joining materials by electrofusion (up to 10mm)

  • Jointing materials by butt fusion process (up to 180mm)
  • Jointing materials by mechanical means
  • Installing water mains above 300mm nominal bore or 355mm polyethylene

Distribution Pathway Specific Units

  • Installing equipment for safe working on highways
  • Jointing materials by electrofusion and butt fusion processes as required
  • Installing water mains above 300mm nominal bore or 355mm polyethylene
  • Additional optional units for reinstatement, larger diameter jointing, and restoration of network components
