The CABWI NCO2 Water Main Layer course provides Level 2 training for operatives responsible for the installation, jointing, maintenance, and commissioning of water mains within the utility sector. Delegates gain hands-on experience in planning and preparing main installations, excavation support, jointing techniques, reinstatement, and pressure testing, all in accordance with safety and environmental protocols. Prerequisites

Although there are no formal entry requirements, learners must be currently employed within the water industry and actively involved in service laying operations in order to generate the required workplace evidence for assessment.

Assessment is carried out through the development of a portfolio of evidence, enabling learners to demonstrate their competence within practical, real-world working environments.

Course Content

This course provides the technical knowledge and practical skills required for safe and compliant water mains operations. Content is aligned with CABWI qualification specifications and may follow one of two pathways:

Core Units (Common to All Pathways)

Creating an efficient and effective working environment in utilities network construction
Maintaining a safe and secure site environment in water network construction
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
Installing site equipment for safe utilities operations
Locating and avoiding supply apparatus
Excavating and maintaining holes and trenches
Operating powered tools and equipment for routine and predictable tasks
Self-Lay Pathway Specific Units

Joining materials by electrofusion (up to 10mm)

Jointing materials by butt fusion process (up to 180mm)
Jointing materials by mechanical means
Installing water mains above 300mm nominal bore or 355mm polyethylene

Distribution Pathway Specific Units

Installing equipment for safe working on highways
Jointing materials by electrofusion and butt fusion processes as required
Installing water mains above 300mm nominal bore or 355mm polyethylene
Additional optional units for reinstatement, larger diameter jointing, and restoration of network components

Practical Skills & Site Competence

Planning and preparing mains installations
