The NRSWA Operatives Reassessment Course enables existing operatives to renew their street works accreditation and maintain legal compliance under the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) 1991.

This refresher programme updates knowledge on safe excavation, signing and guarding, reinstatement techniques, and the correct procedures for working on public highways. The course ensures operatives remain competent, compliant, and up to date with current Street Works standards, codes of practice, and legislative requirements.

Delegates complete focused refresher training followed by unit-specific reassessments to demonstrate continued competence for another five years.

What To Have With You To Attend The Course

Operatives will complete a theory-based assessment delivered via touchscreen tablet. To achieve a pass, candidates must obtain at least 80% in each unit.

The reassessment course revisits the essential skills and safety principles required for street works operations. Each module includes a concise refresher session followed by an online touchscreen assessment.

LA – Location & Avoidance of Underground Apparatus
(Formerly Unit 1 — applicable to both Operatives and Supervisors)

  • Safe use of CAT & Genny
  • Reading utility plans
  • Avoidance techniques and hazard identification

O1 – Signing, Lighting & Guarding
(Formerly Unit 2)

  • Setting out compliant traffic management
  • Safety zones and pedestrian routes
  • Temporary signage and protection of road users

O2 – Excavation in the Highway
(Formerly Unit 3)

  • Safe excavation methods
  • Soil types, shoring, and trench support
  • Preventing service strikes

O3 – Reinstatement & Compaction of Backfill Materials
(Formerly Unit 4)

  • Layering and compaction of backfill
  • Material selection and compliance with specifications

O4 – Reinstatement of Sub-base and Road Base (Non-Bituminous)

  • Constructing sub-base and road-base layers
  • Avoiding settlement issues

O5 – Reinstatement in Cold-Lay Bituminous Materials

  • Cold-lay application and compaction
  • Ensuring durable finishes
