Course Overview

This two-day, highly interactive course helps Contractor Design Approval Engineers (CDAEs) and Lead Contractor Design Approval Engineers (LCDAEs), and those preparing to become one, understand National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) Supplier Requirement (SR) NG/ET/SR188 Design Management and the wider Supplier Requirements that apply to their role. It is not a lecture: expect plenty of questions, real-world scenarios, group discussion and a homework task to present on day 2.

Every CDAE and LCDAE on an NGET project must be nominated on the NG/ET/SR188.12 CDAE and LCDAE Appointment Form, and every nomination is checked by NGET’s Design Assurance Engineer. The form requires a working knowledge of NGET’s Generic Scope of Work and Supplier Requirements, and an understanding of the general principles of sustainability. This course is designed to help meet those requirements, and to prepare delegates for the sign-off accountability the role carries.

New to the role? Read our guide How to Become a CDAE or Lead CDAE on National Grid Projects. It covers the typical NGET experience employers expect, the route from CDAE to LCDAE, and the SR188.12 prerequisites.

Please note

This course provides guidance and best practice and is for information only. It is not an official National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) course, and it is not endorsed by or delivered on behalf of NGET. Each contractor has its own competency matrix for the Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE) and Lead Contractor Design Approval Engineer (LCDAE) roles, and NGET reviews each nomination individually. Always check with your own organisation and NGET’s Design Assurance Engineer for your discipline, and refer to the current issue of each Supplier Requirement and appointment form.

Wider NGET Supplier Requirements

The SR188.12 form requires a working knowledge of the following Supplier Requirements:

SR Title
SR/106 Equipment Commissioning and Decommissioning
SR/107 Relay and Protection Control Settings
SR/135 Drawing Management
SR/141 Authorisation Process for Commissioning and Settings Roles
SR/163 Management of Works
SR/183 Type Registration
SR/188 Design Management
SR/241 Quality Management and Manufacturing Assurance

The course also covers SR/212 Sustainable Construction, which supports the sustainability prerequisite on SR188.12.

SR/234 (Impressed Voltage) is covered in depth on our EUSR Impressed Voltage for Designers & NG SR/234 Overview course, which also meets the separate Impressed Voltage prerequisite on SR188.12.

How the course works

The course is built around taking part. Delegates learn by questioning, discussing and applying the Supplier Requirements, not just by listening to them.

  • Lots of questions: you’ll be questioned throughout, and you’re encouraged to bring your own questions from current projects.
  • Scenarios: you’ll work through realistic National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) design scenarios in groups, such as classifying a design change, preparing a Design Compliance Audit Assurance Report (DCAAR) for Design Compliance Audit, and deciding when a Technical Deviation Request is needed.
  • Homework on day 1: at the end of the first day, each delegate is given a task to prepare overnight.
  • Presentation on day 2: you’ll present your findings to the group. This builds confidence in explaining and defending design decisions, which Contractor Design Approval Engineers (CDAEs) and Lead Contractor Design Approval Engineers (LCDAEs) do with NGET’s Design Assurance Engineers, the Principal Designer Representative (PD Rep) and the Principal Contractor.

The approach also prepares you for the competence check that NGET’s Design Assurance Engineer carries out on every CDAE and LCDAE nomination.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • explain the responsibilities of the Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE), Lead Contractor Design Approval Engineer (LCDAE) and Contractor Design Approval Engineer – Limited [CDAE (Limited)] under SR188
  • describe the SR188 design process, from Design Intent Document (DID) and DID Freeze through Design Packages and Design Compliance Audit Assurance Reports (DCAARs) to design change control
  • classify design changes as minor or significant and identify when a revised DCAAR is needed
  • identify when a Technical Deviation Request or Type Registration derogation is needed
  • explain how the design interfaces with construction under SR163
  • explain the purpose and key requirements of each Supplier Requirement covered
  • understand what is needed for an SR188.12 appointment
