The EUSR HSG47 – Avoiding Dangers from Underground Services (HV Substations) course provides essential skills for safely working near underground utilities, particularly within or adjacent to National Grid Live HV Substations. Who should Attend This Course

This course will benefit working professionals who need to understand utility drawings and be able to identify types of services and how to locate underground services within or near a National Grid Live HV Substation. This course is a prerequisite for a number of Principal Contractors and nominated roles such as TP137.11 now SR163.11 PCSM.

Prerequisites

Participants must have completed the NG Person Substations course before enrolling in HSG47 – Avoiding Dangers from Underground Services (HV Substations).
Good understanding of spoken and written English.

Understanding GS6 legislation and implications for safe digging
Review of BSI PAS 128:2022, the current specification for underground utility detection

Utility Awareness & Detection

Safe use of CAT4 (Cable Avoidance Tool) and Genny (Signal Generator)
Understanding impressed voltages and their impact when using detection equipment

Equipment Provided: All CAT4 and Genny detection equipment supplied for practical exercises. Delegates are required to bring their own PPE.
Prerequisites: Suitable for operatives working near HV substations; familiarity with utility work or excavation is beneficial.
Certification: Delegates achieving assessment receive EUSR HSG47 registration, recognised across the utilities and construction sectors.
Safety & PPE: Delegates must wear appropriate PPE, including high-visibility clothing and safety boots.
