Course Overview

The CITB SSSTS Refresher Course is a one-day course for delegates who have previously completed the full two-day SSSTS course within the last five years. This refresher updates supervisors on current health, safety, welfare, and environmental standards, as well as legislative changes relevant to construction site supervision.

Endorsed by BuildUK and the United Kingdom Contractors Group (UKCG), this course is designed to maintain compliance and reinforce best practice in supervising construction activities. Delegates will gain a highly recognised qualification, valid for five years, ensuring ongoing competence as a site supervisor.

Who should Attend This Course

The CITB SSSTS Refresher course is for delegates who have previously passed the two day CITB SSSTS course within the last five years and can provide in date proof of successful attendance.

Prerequisites

A valid SSSTS certificate gained in the last five years. You must take this course before your certificate expires
To be able to read, write and understand English to a good level.

What To Have With You To Attend The Course

Photo ID
Access to a laptop or PC computer with a webcam, microphone, and speaker, a stable internet connection and quiet space for the entirety of the course

Assessment

The examination paper is compulsory and consists of 25 questions, the exam lasts for 30 minutes and covers all aspects of the course. The examination pass mark is 80% (24 out of 30). The paper consists of 22 multiple choice questions and three short written questions. There are four safety critical questions in each exam paper. The delegate must answer all four of these questions correctly to pass the exam. The multiple-choice questions are worth 1 point each, whereas written questions can score between 1-3 marks. Delegates are permitted to use the Construction site supervision (GE706) publication for the last ten minutes of the examination period.

The SSSTS Refresher Course revisits key topics from the original SSSTS course, highlighting recent legislative and procedural changes. The course uses practical examples to support supervisors in effectively managing their daily responsibilities and maintaining compliance.

Statutory inspections, reporting, and leadership

Module 2 – Workforce Welfare & Hazards

Health, welfare, and first aid procedures
Hazardous substances, asbestos, dust, and fumes
Noise, vibration, and manual handling

Module 3 – Site Setup & Equipment

Site security and fire safety
Electricity, plant, and equipment safety
Lifting operations and lifting equipment

Module 4 – Working at Height & Confined Spaces

Safe working at height
Excavations, underground and overhead services
Confined spaces and temporary works

Module 5 – Environmental Awareness

Pollution and waste management
Minimising site nuisance and environmental impact

All delegates receive CITB mandatory publications relevant to the course (eBooks for virtual courses, hardcopy for in-person delivery).

Construction site supervision (GE706)

The exam must be taken at the end of the site supervisor safety training scheme refresher course.

On successful completion of the 1-day site supervisor safety training scheme refresher course, the delegate’s CITB (Site Safety Plus) certificate is renewed for a further five years. The certificate is sent electronically in PDF format to the course booker.

To remain certified in this area, you will need to retake a course before the expiry date on your certificate, otherwise the full course will need to be retaken. Funding can take time to agree, so if your certificate is due to expire, contact your Employer Network well before your expiry date.

CITB funding
If your company is CITB registered and up to date with the levy, you may be able to get funding towards this SSSTS Refresher course through your regional CITB Employer Network. As a CITB Training Provider Network member, we can deliver Employer Network-funded training and invoice you only for your share.
