Course Overview

*Please note, we are a 3rd party booker for this course which is delivered by National Grid Electricity Transmission*

The NG Competent Person – Overhead Lines: Application of Drain Earths (No Access onto Conductors) course provides delegates with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely apply drain earths to overhead line systems in accordance with National Grid Safety Rules.

This training focuses specifically on situations where drain earths must be installed without physically accessing the conductors, making it suitable for roles such as tower painters, maintenance teams, and those working in the vicinity of high-voltage overhead lines. The course aligns fully with National Safety Instruction 2 (NSI2) and reinforces the duties, responsibilities, and safety-critical requirements expected of National Grid Competent Persons.

National Grid Safety Framework

  • Overview of National Grid Safety Rules
  • Scope and requirements of NSI2 – Work on or near HV Overhead Lines
  • Understanding Safety Documents, including Permits, Limitations of Access, and Sanction for Test
  • Roles and responsibilities of a Competent Person (CP) within the National Grid environment

Principles of Drain Earthing

  • Purpose and function of drain earths in OHL environments
  • Situations requiring the application of drain earths without conductor access
  • Equipment identification, selection and inspection
  • Understanding electrical induction, fault currents and equipotential zones

Safe Work Procedures

  • Step-by-step procedure for applying drain earths from ground level
  • Establishing safe working distances and exclusion zones
  • Working under issued Safety Documents
  • Visual checks, communication protocols and in-field verification
  • Common hazards and how to mitigate them

PPE & Safety Controls

  • Required PPE for overhead line earthing activities
