Course Overview

*Please note, we are a 3rd party booker for this course which is delivered by National Grid Electricity Transmission*

The National Grid Competent Person (CPD) OHL course provides training for personnel authorised to work directly on conductors while applying drain earths. This course covers high-risk operations associated with restoring motive power post-fault and ensures delegates are fully competent to perform these tasks safely under Limited Access Certificate (LAC) and Permit for Work (PFW) protocols.

Delegates will gain both practical and theoretical knowledge to manage high-voltage conductors safely, in compliance with National Grid Safety Rules.

The National Grid Authorisation Training can only be booked either directly with NG or through the live NG Booking Portal via an approved provider, such as ourselves.

To Book this training please contact us on 01926 674340 or email Training@Pragmatic-consulting.co.uk

This course is typically delivered for groups of four or more delegates.
If you have fewer than four learners, please contact us — in many cases we can coordinate availability with other contractors to arrange a suitable training date.

What To Have With You To Attend The Course

Assessment

Candidates are assessed through a combination of a multiple-choice written examination and a practical skills assessment, ensuring they can safely and accurately apply drain earths without contact with conductors. Passing both the knowledge and practical elements is mandatory for authorisation.

Course Content

The CPD course combines practical and theoretical instruction to ensure delegates can safely work on conductors. Key topics include:

Roles and Responsibilities of a CPD

  • Duties under National Grid Safety Rules
  • Accountability for working on live conductors

Application of Drain Earths on Conductors

  • Techniques for safe earth application during restoration of motive power
  • Managing high-voltage risks while working on conductors

Limited Access Certificates (LAC) & Permit for Work (PFW)

  • Procedures and authorisation requirements
  • Compliance with NG documentation

Risk Assessment and Emergency Procedures

  • Identifying hazards during conductor operations
  • Mitigation strategies and incident management

Site Communication & Coordination

  • Working with control engineers and field personnel
  • Following safety documentation and operational protocols

Practical Exercises

  • Supervised application of drain earths on conductors
  • Operational simulations under realistic substation and OHL conditions

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Apply drain earths safely on conductors in compliance with NSI 2, NSI 4, NSI 6, and NSI 8.
  • Understand and follow LAC and PFW procedures for working on live overhead lines.
  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with high-voltage operations.
  • Demonstrate competence in restoring motive power safely post-fault.
  • Coordinate effectively with Control Engineers and field teams.

Scope: Focused on high-risk conductor work requiring CPD authorisation under NG Safety Rules.

Useful documentation includes:

  • National Grid Safety Rules
  • NSI 2 – Work on or near High Voltage Overhead Lines
  • NSI 4 – Work on Low Voltage Systems
  • NSI 6 – Access to Towers and Substations
  • NSI 8 – Earthing Responsibilities
  • NSI 30 – Additional safety guidance

Authorisation Scope: Includes supervised practical exercises for switching, isolation, and portable earth application.
