Course Overview

This EUSR Approved Earthing, Brazing and Exothermic Welding course combines comprehensive classroom-based theory with practical training, giving delegates the knowledge and practical skills required to understand and apply earthing, brazing and exothermic welding procedures.

Over the course, delegates will develop their understanding of earthing principles, UK earthing systems, relevant guidance and standards, National Grid NSI 24, earth tape installation and the practical application of brazing and exothermic welding techniques.

The course includes a minimum of 60 minutes of practical training per delegate, with practical sessions delivered in smaller groups to provide delegates with hands-on experience and trainer support.

The course combines classroom-based theory with practical training and assessment.

Training includes:

  • Tutor-led presentations
  • Discussion and questioning
  • Review of relevant guidance and standards
  • Visual learning materials
  • Demonstration of practical equipment
  • Practical demonstrations
  • Supervised hands-on practical exercises
  • Trainer feedback and questioning
  • Practical assessment
  • Written assessment

Who should Attend This Course

This course is suitable for delegates who require both theoretical knowledge and practical training in earthing, brazing and exothermic welding within the electrical and utilities sectors.

No previous experience is required. However, an electrical background and experience as a National Grid Electrical Competent Person (NGET CP) would be advantageous.

Prerequisites

No previous experience is required.

However, an electrical background and experience as an NGET CP would be advantageous.

What To Have With You To Attend The Course

Photo ID

Delegates must bring their own full PPE to the course, including:

  • Safety helmet
  • Flame-resistant or flame-retardant overalls/workwear
  • Safety boots
  • Brazing/welding gloves
  • Impact-resistant clear safety goggles
  • Hi-vis jacket and trousers

Loose items must be secured before participating in practical activities.

Assessment

Delegates complete both a written assessment and practical assessment. The written assessment checks delegates’ understanding of the theory, principles, guidance and procedures covered throughout the course. The practical assessment allows delegates to demonstrate their ability to apply the procedures and techniques covered during the practical training. Successful completion requires delegates to demonstrate the required knowledge and practical skills covered by the course.

Course Content

The course covers the theory and practical application of:

  • The basic principles of earthing
  • Different types of earthing systems used in the UK
  • Electrical theory, legislation and relevant British Standards
  • Soil resistivity and its measurement
  • Earth electrodes and earth electrode installation
  • Lightning and earthing
  • Lightning protection systems
  • National Grid NSI 24 requirements
  • Temporary Earth Bonds
  • Earth Bonds to the Main Earth System (MES)
  • Earth tape installation and repair
  • Brazing techniques and procedures
  • Exothermic welding techniques and procedures
  • Correct use of associated equipment
  • Repairs and connections to the Main Earth System
  • Safe working practices when carrying out earthing repairs and connections

Guidance and standards

The course includes an overview of relevant guidance and standards, including:

  • NSI 24 – National Grid requirements relating to earthing
  • TGN(E)114 – Replacement or Repair of Stolen or Defective Earth Tape
  • TGN(E)187 – Guidance for Conductor Jointing in Substations
  • BS 7430:2011+A1:2015 – Code of practice for protective earthing of electrical installations

Delegates will review the relevant requirements and consider how they apply to the practical procedures covered during the course.

Practical training

The practical element allows delegates to put the theory into practice using the equipment and techniques associated with earthing, brazing and exothermic welding.

Practical sessions include demonstrations and supervised hands-on activities covering:

  • Preparation and use of associated equipment
  • Brazing techniques
  • Exothermic welding techniques
  • Earthing connections and repairs
  • Earth tape work
  • Application of procedures to the Main Earth System

Delegates are split into smaller groups for the practical sessions, allowing the trainer to provide guidance and monitor individual performance.

Each delegate will receive a minimum of 60 minutes of practical training during the course.

Earth tape and earthing systems

The course covers the principles and practical considerations involved in earth tape installation and repair.

Delegates will review the requirements of TGN(E)114, including the replacement or repair of stolen or defective earth tape, and consider how these requirements relate to practical work on earthing systems.

The course also covers earth electrode installation and the requirements associated with connections to the Main Earth System.

Brazing and exothermic welding

Delegates will learn about the principles behind brazing and exothermic welding before progressing to practical application.

The trainer will demonstrate the appropriate equipment and procedures before delegates undertake supervised practical activities.

The practical training is designed to help delegates develop confidence in correctly using the equipment and applying good practice when creating or repairing earthing connections.

National Grid NSI 24

The course includes an overview of National Grid NSI 24 and its application to earthing procedures.

Delegates will consider requirements relating to Temporary Earth Bonds and Earth Bonds to the Main Earth System, helping to link the classroom-based theory to the practical activities undertaken during the course.

On successful completion

Delegates who successfully complete the course will have developed and demonstrated their theoretical understanding and practical application of earthing, brazing and exothermic welding procedures.

This includes the use of associated equipment, earthing repairs and connections, and the application of relevant guidance and procedures covered during the course.

Maximum number of delegates

8 delegates

Delegates are split into smaller groups during the practical sessions to allow for appropriate trainer support, supervision and individual assessment.
