Course Overview

The NRSWA LA Reassessment course is designed for operatives and supervisors whose Unit LA (Location & Avoidance of Underground Apparatus) qualification is due to expire. This refresher-based programme updates delegates on current best practice for locating underground services and ensures continued compliance with the New Roads and Street Works Act (1991).

The course provides focused revision of key principles, safe-use requirements for CAT and Genny equipment, and changes in legislation or industry guidance. Delegates then complete the mandatory theory reassessment needed to renew their Street Works accreditation for a further five years.

Course Content

This reassessment course provides focused refresher training to ensure delegates understand the current best practices, legal duties, and technical skills required for safe location of underground utilities. The content includes:

Refresher Training

  • Review of underground utility types (electricity, gas, water, telecoms, fibre, drainage) and the risks associated with each
  • Updated guidance and legislation relating to the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) and HSG47
  • Utility plans and mapping refresher, including interpreting drawings, symbols, and limitations of utility records
  • Safe working practices to prevent strikes, including sequential scanning and safe digging techniques
  • Equipment principles and limitations, focusing on effective use of:
    • Cable Avoidance Tools (CAT)
    • Signal Generators (Genny)
  • Common service-locating errors and how to avoid them in real-site conditions
  • Risk assessment considerations, including control measures and escalation processes

What Delegates Need: Original SWQR card or evidence of current/expired registration must be provided before reassessment can take place.

SWQR Registration: Pragmatic Consulting completes all registration submissions to ensure renewed cards are issued promptly.

Compliance Note: Without a valid LA certificate, operatives and supervisors cannot legally undertake work involving locating and avoiding underground apparatus on public highways.
