CAT and Genny Training

So, lots of people ask us here at Pragmatic what is CAT and Genny Training? So we thought we would write something to help.

Let’s start with what is a CAT?

A CAT is a Cable Avoidance Tool used to detect buried services.

What is a Genny?

A GENNY is a signal generator used with a CAT to aid the detection and tracing of underground services.

What is CAT and Genny Training?

CAT & Genny training teaches delegates how to safely use a CAT and Genny to identify and avoid services located in the ground.

Why is this Important?

When we dig and excavate ground, we need to identify what and where services are located so that we can avoid damaging services such as pipes, cables and other metallics.  If we don’t correctly identify these it can lead to additional work, delays in work, compensation events and ultimately could cause serious injury or fatalities to workers and members of the public. Find out more about the hidden dangers that Cat & Genny Training is designed to avoid.

What will I learn?

Delegates will learn the importance of using both the CAT and Genny correctly and in different modes.

The importance of always using the Genny by being more imaginative in their thought process when using the Genny.

HSG47 Guidance and the consequences of not using the correct equipment, following the correct guidance and documentation.

Principles of PAS 128 Specification for underground utility detection, verification and location.

How to use a variety of tools such as service drawings, visual markers, street furniture and surveys to help understand the survey results and produce relevant Risk Assessments and Method Statement (RAMS) to help keep themselves, workers and member of the public safe.

Delegates will also learn how to use various attachments and associated equipment.

Do I need previous experience to attend?

No previous experience of using a CAT & Genny or any other cable avoidance equipment is required.

Who are these courses aimed at?

Anyone who will be required to use CAT & Genny equipment on site as well as site supervisors, permit to dig operatives, site managers and project managers as examples.
