How Do I Renew My Streetworks Card (NRSWA)?

If you work on the UK’s highways, your NRSWA (Streetworks) card is essential. Whether you’re an Operative (Yellow) or Supervisor (Blue), your card is valid for 5 years, after which you must renew it to stay compliant.

What Are My Options for Renewing?

You have two renewal options depending on your status and card validity:

  1. 2-Day Reassessment Course (if you’re eligible)
  2. Full 5-Day NRSWA Course (if your card is too far expired or you fail reassessment)

When Should I Renew?

Your Streetworks card can be reassessed:

  • Within the 4th year after it’s been issued
  • Up to 5 years after expiry (this is called the grace period)

Important:
Most providers will not accept reassessment bookings during the final 6 months of the grace period. This is to ensure administration and card delivery before your eligibility runs out. Miss the window—and you’ll have to start over with the full 5-day course.

What is involved on the reassessment course?

  • Brief refreshers for each unit on your card
  • Theory-only assessments—no practical tasks

You’ll complete:

  • 20 multiple-choice questions per unit (randomised and electronic)
  • Use of open-book materials:
    • HSG47
    • Red Book (ACOP)
    • ARTSM guidance
    • SROH 4
  • Time limit: 45 minutes per test
  • Pass mark: 80% (16/20)
  • Up to 3 attempts per unit allowed

Can I Add or Remove Units?

  • To add units: You must complete full training and assessments (usually via the 5-day course).
  • To omit units: You may relinquish specific ones during the renewal process.

What If I Fail My Reassessment?

If you fail all 3 attempts for any unit, you’ll need to retake only the failed unit(s) in a future reassessment session.

Can I Reassess a White Card (Supervisor & Operative Combined)?

No. You’ll need to book separate reassessments for Operative and Supervisor roles.

I only have Signing, Lighting and Guarding on my card, are the processes the same?

Yes, you have similar options to complete the full 1-day course or a reassessment. However, the reassessment is only half-day and you can therefore compete both Supervisor and Operative on the same day.

What If I’ve Lost My Card?

If you’ve lost your Streetworks card:

  • You must request a replacement
  • You’ll need to prove eligibility before booking reassessment
  • Training providers require a copy of the actual card — awarding body certificates are not accepted
