Celebrating 12 Years of Pragmatic Consulting: A Journey of Growth, Learning, and Purpose

This summer marks a major milestone for Pragmatic Consulting Ltd – 12 years since our Managing Director, Jo Niblett, left the corporate world to build a business with a mission: to make training in the utilities and construction sectors more inclusive, pragmatic, and impactful.

Jo’s journey began after leaving National Grid in 2013. At the time, she didn’t have a clear plan for what came next, but she had two driving forces: a passion for training and a determination to improve the way it was delivered. With teaching and assessing qualifications in hand, Jo approached leading training providers; only to be told she didn’t meet their criteria. Rather than accept that answer, she set out to prove them wrong.

“I wanted to deliver training and assessments differently, focusing on flexibility, inclusivity, and genuine industry relevance.” – Jo Niblett

From Dining Room Table to National Training Provider

Pragmatic Consulting began life in Jo’s dining room, reaching out to former site contractors, visiting projects, and listening to what workers felt wasn’t working in their training. That feedback became the foundation for an EUSR-approved training centre offering BESC AME Substation, OHL, and Cable courses.

Early courses sometimes ran with just one or two delegates, but the commitment to deliver never wavered. Word spread, and soon major clients like Murphy came on board. Over time, Jo’s team expanded to include trusted ex-colleagues and industry experts, delivering a growing portfolio of accredited courses across the UK.

Milestones and Growth

Over the years, Pragmatic Consulting has:

  • Grown from a one-person operation to a respected training provider in the utilities and construction industries.
  • Gained a reputation for flexible, client-focused training delivery.
  • Expanded to offer a wide range of EUSR, CSCS, SHEA, safety, and specialist technical training.
  • Supported hundreds of companies in improving safety, compliance, and workforce skills.
  • Built a dedicated and talented team, including Senior Operations Manager Vicky Jones, whose leadership since joining in 2020 has strengthened operations and client support.

Adapting to Challenges

Adaptability has been key to the company’s success. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Pragmatic Consulting adapted course delivery to continue meeting client needs, so successfully that Jo was interviewed by Sarah Beale, then Chief Executive of CITB, about the company’s innovative approach.

The business has also developed bespoke EUSR-endorsed training programmes to meet specific client requirements, reflecting the belief that one-size-fits-all training doesn’t always deliver the best results.

A People-First Approach

Jo credits much of the company’s success to the support of family, friends, colleagues, and clients. Her son Adam has been instrumental in building back-office systems, while a strong network of industry peers and supporters has helped Pragmatic Consulting thrive.

“Running your own business is one of the hardest and most rewarding things you can do. I am truly blessed to have a team and clients who share the same vision for raising standards in training and safety.” – Jo Niblett

Looking Ahead

Twelve years on, Pragmatic Consulting continues to grow and innovate, delivering training that not only meets compliance standards but also helps businesses create safer, more productive worksites.

As Jo reflects on the journey so far, one thing is clear—this is more than just a business. It’s a calling.

Thank you to every client, delegate, partner, and team member who has been part of the last 12 years. Here’s to the next chapter.
