Course details

This EUSR‑approved Butt Fusion Welding course offers both theory and hands-on practice for both operators and supervisors, teaching delegates how to safely and effectively perform butt fusion welding on polyethylene (PE) pipe systems used in water, gas, and utilities infrastructure. The training is suitable for both operators and supervisors and follows National Occupational Standards and covers pipelines ranging from small-diameter service pipes to large trunk mains (90 mm–1,400 mm).

This training course has been mapped to CABWI MUNC10 (NCO water) and City and Guilds 6028-21 Unit 211 (NCO Gas) and EUS MUNC17 Joint Materials by Butt Fusion processes.

Those candidates possessing little to no experience of welding Polyethylene Pipe by the means of Butt Fusion welding processes should select the 2-day course. 

Experienced Butt Fusion Welders seeking certification, or a refresher authorisation should contact the office for the 1-day course.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, you will understand butt fusion welding techniques and be able to:

1. Identify suitable PE pipe grades (PE80/PE100) and fittings
2. Inspect and prepare equipment and work area safely
3. Set up butt fusion machinery correctly
4. Execute fusion welding for pressure pipe systems
5. Inspect finished joints for quality assurance
6. Recognise and avoid defects like “cold welds” or misalignment
7. Understand butt fusion welding techniques and the welding process

Course content

1. Understand the principles of Polyethylene (PE) Jointing (Butt Fusion Welding)
2. Identify pipe and fittings and understand marking
3. Carry out Risk Assessments
4. Carry out pre-jointing checks
5. Make satisfactory joints to meet industry specifications
6. Inspect for and identify acceptable quality joints

Assessment & Certification

Assessment includes:

• Written/multiple-choice theory test
• Oral questioning
• Practical welding exercise evaluated for compliance and joint quality

Successful delegates receive:

• EUSR‑endorsed certificate and EUSR card, valid for 3 years

Certification for this course is valid for 3 years from the date of training. To remain certified in this area, you will need to retake the assessment before the expiry date on your card.
