What is CAT & Genny training?

CAT (Cable Avoidance Tool) and Genny (Signal Generator) are tools used to locate buried utilities before excavation. Our course teaches correct usage to prevent accidents and support safe digging.

Course Overview

Category 1: Locate Utility Services covers the minimum training and assessment required for those working to safely detect utility services using recognised and approved detection methods.

This course will benefit working professionals who need to understand utility drawings and be able to identify types of services and how to locate underground services.

Course Content

1. Legislation around underground services

2. How to interpret utility drawings and line search documents
3. Avoiding damage to underground services
4. Detection of underground services using cable avoidance tools (CAT4 & Genny)
5. Understanding of legislation requirements and implications of HSG47
6. Overview of British Standards Institution (BSI) PAS 128:2022 which is the current specification for underground utility detection
7. Use location equipment to locate underground services
8. Identify the dangers and hazards associated with underground services
9. Identify the dangers and hazards associated with overhead lines and services
10. Understand the dangers of working near or under overhead lines
11. Understand the risks of making contact with overhead lines during excavations
12. Understanding of legislation requirements and implications of GS6

Assessment

A variety of activities, oral, multiple choice and written questions plus onsite assessment.

Certificates

Once the delegate has successfully completed the course and assessment, the results will be submitted to the awarding body and cards will be issued to the delegate in due course.

Certification for this course is valid for 3 years from the date of training. To remain certified in this area, you will need to retake the assessment before the expiry date on your card.

Prerequisites

There are no formal entry requirements however a basic level of written and spoken English is required.
