Course Overview

The Signing, Lighting and Guarding training course aims is to provide Operatives with the skills and knowledge to perform their respective duties when signing, lighting and guarding as per the standards prescribed by the Awarding Bodies and in-line with the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA), in order to safeguard themselves and others.

As of the 1st January 1993, new legislation in the form of the New Roads and Street Works Act (1991), made it mandatory that only appropriately qualified employees could work on a public street or road.

The NRSWA 01 (old Unit 2) Signing, Lighting and Guarding course has been designed for Operatives who need to erect signing, lighting and guarding for work on the roadways and highways.  This course will cover the use of relevant equipment on the roads including stop/go boards, portable traffic lights and traffic control signs and the practical is delivered on a Live Road.

Course Content

By the end of the Signing, Lighting and Guarding training course operatives will be able to:

• Understand the basic principles of the NRSWA and standards prescribed by the National Occupational Standards
• Understand the safety implications of carrying out street works.
• Recognise conditions that may necessitate the introduction of special measures.
• Identify and use correct traffic control measures.
• Erect and dismantle signing, guarding, and lighting safely and in accordance with the supporting Code of Practice
• Correctly and confidently operate the equipment used.

Assessment

The NRSWA 01 (old Unit 2) Signing, Lighting and Guarding) training course will be delivered with a high proportion of discussion and assessments.

The Operatives assessment consists of theory based and practical assessments.

Certificates

Once the delegate has successfully completed the course and assessments, the results will be submitted to the awarding body and a certificate, and a Street Works card will be issued to the delegate in due course.

Certification for this course is valid for 5 years from the date of training. To remain certified in this area, you will need to retake the assessment before the expiry date on your card.
