What is a Drop Kerb

A drop kerb (sometimes called a dropped kerb) is a section of pavement where the kerb  (the raised edge of a road) has been lowered to let vehicles safely cross the pavement and access a driveway or off-road parking area. In simple terms, it acts like a small ramp, making it easier for cars to enter or leave your property without damaging the pavement.

How can I get a drop kerb?

The process for getting a drop kerb depends on your local council. You’ll need to contact them directly to find out what’s required in your area. You can also visit the Government website to find your local council using your postcode.

Here are some key things to know:

• Most councils require a drop kerb licence. The cost varies depending on where you live; typically from around £50 to £400 + VAT and is non-refundable.
• You might also need planning permission, especially if your driveway connects to a classified road, your property is listed, or it’s in a conservation area.
• If vehicles at and over 3,500kg (like commercial vehicles) will be crossing, the kerb will need to be built to a higher standard, similar to a road crossing.

Can I install a drop kerb myself?

Possibly, but it depends on your council’s rules.

In most cases, you’ll need:

• The NRSWA Operative 5-day qualification
• A valid licence from your local council
• Suitable public liability insurance

You’ll also likely need asset drawings (for example, from Plan to Dig) and an approved Traffic Management Plan.

Please Note: some councils only allow approved contractors to carry out this work, so always check first.

Can my builder install a drop kerb for me?

Yes, again, depending on council requirements.

Your builder would need:

• The NRSWA Operative 5-day qualification
• A licence from the local council
• Suitable public liability insurance

They’ll also need asset drawings and an agreed Traffic Management Plan.

Many councils have a list of approved contractors, in those cases, you must use someone from that list.

Can I complete the NRSWA / Streetworks course online?

No - currently, no awarding body in the UK allows this course to be completed online. Because it includes important hands-on elements, training must be done in person at an approved and registered training centre.
