NRSWA Operatives Course (LA, O1-O5 & O8)

Course details

This NRSWA Operatives Course (Cold Lay) is designed for individuals working on or near the public highway who need to carry out reinstatement using cold lay materials. It forms part of the recognised streetworks operative certification required under the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) 1991.

By completing this training, delegates will gain the skills and certification needed to carry out cold lay reinstatement work and apply for their Streetworks Operative Card.

As of the 1st January 1993, new legislation in the form of the New Roads and Street Works Act (1991), made it mandatory that only appropriately qualified employees could work on a public street or road.

This course is ideal for:

Course Content

The training includes:

• An introduction to NRSWA streetworks operative responsibilities
• Cold lay materials: application, compliance, and safety
• Preparing and reinstating excavated surfaces using cold lay methods
• Temporary and permanent reinstatement procedures
• Legal duties under NRSWA
• Completing required documentation

By the end of the NRSWA Operatives training course operatives will be able to:

• Understand the basic principles of the NRSWA and standards prescribed by the National Occupational Standards
• Understand the safety implications of carrying out street works.
• Recognise conditions that may necessitate the introduction of special measures.
• Reference documentation used within the Highways Industry

Units Covered

• LA - Locating underground apparatus
• O1 - Signing, lighting and guarding
• O2 - Excavating the highway
• O3 - Reinstating compacting and backfill materials
• O4 - Reinstating sub-base and road base non-bituminous materials
• O5 - Reinstating cold-lay bituminous materials
• O8 - Reinstating modular surfaces and concrete footways

Assessment

Delegates will undertake:

• Practical cold lay reinstatement exercises
• Multiple-choice theory assessment covering street works operative training and regulations
• Successful candidates receive certification and can apply for their streetworks operative card

Certificates

Once the delegate has successfully completed the course and assessments, the results will be submitted to the awarding body and a certificate, and a Street Works Operative Card (SWQR) will be issued to the delegate.

Certification for this course is valid for 5 years from the date of training. To remain certified in this area, you will need to retake the assessment before the expiry date on your card.
