Course details

The NCO 2 Water Main Layer course provides intermediate-level training for professionals responsible for installing, connecting, and maintaining water mains within the utility sector. Accredited by CABWI, this qualification leads to EUSR NCO 2 Water Main layer registration, essential for supervisors and operative roles on water distribution networks.
Who Should Attend?
This course is suited to:
- Water operative technicians working with main water pipes
- Individuals progressing from NCO 1 (Assistant) roles
- Site supervisors and tradespeople handling mains installation
- Candidates seeking formal Level 2 water utilities certification
Course Content
Key skill areas include:
- Planning and preparing main waterpipe installations
- Excavation support and mains laying methodologies
- Jointing techniques and trench reinstatement
- Pressure testing and chlorination procedures
- Identifying hazards and implementing safe system-of-work methods
- Embedded environmental and health & safety protocols
Training incorporates classroom theory, practical site simulations, and assessments aligned with industry rigour.

- MUNC14: Conduct pressure and soundness testing of water network engineering products or assets
- MUNC18: Restore water network components to operational condition by repair
Entry Requirements
Although there are no formal entry requirements, learners must be currently employed within the water industry and actively involved in service laying operations in order to generate the required workplace evidence for assessment.
Assessment & Certification
Assessment is carried out through the development of a portfolio of evidence, enabling learners to demonstrate their competence within practical, real-world working environments.
On successful completion, candidates achieve the:
- CABWI Level 2 Certificate in NCO Water – Main Layer
- Eligibility for EUSR registration at NCO Level 2 Main, valid for five years
This certification is valid for five years and ensures you meet competency requirements for working on live water mains.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need NCO 1 before attending Main Layer training?
A: While helpful, previous NCO 1 or equivalent experience in water service pipework is not required if you have practical knowledge of Mains operations.
Q: What is CABWI?
A: CABWI is the certification body for NCO training in the water industry. Their certificates are recognised across UK utility employers.
