Course Overview

The Location and Avoidance of Underground Apparatus training course aims to provide Operatives and Supervisors with the skills and knowledge to carry out cable avoidance work in-line with the current New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) to safeguard themselves and others.

As of the 1st January 1993, new legislation in the form of the New Roads and Street Works Act (1991), made it mandatory that only appropriately qualified employees could work on a public street or road.

Course Content

By the end of the course delegates will be able to:

• Understand the basic principles of the current NRSWA & HSG47 standards as prescribed by City & Guilds 
• Identify potential risks to themselves and others
• Read and understand site plans 
• Operate cable avoidance tools to avoid or locate underground apparatus. 

Assessment

The Operatives and Supervisors assessment consists of theory-based questions on a touch screen tablet, 80% is needed to pass each unit. There is also a practical assessment that each delegate needs to complete successfully.

Certificates

Once the delegate has successfully completed the course and assessments, the results will be submitted to the awarding body and a certificate, and a Street Works Card will be issued to the delegate in due course.

Certification for this course is valid for 5 years from the date of training. To remain certified in this area, you will need to retake the assessment before the expiry date on your card.
