The NRSWA LA course, formerly known as Unit 1, is an essential qualification for anyone working near or around underground utilities. This course is designed to equip operatives and supervisors with the knowledge and skills to safely locate and avoid buried apparatus such as cables and pipes before excavation or digging. It ensures compliance with the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) 1991, helping to minimise risks on-site and protect both workers and the public.

Since 1st January 1993, legislation under the New Roads and Street Works Act (1991) requires all employees working on public highways or streets to hold appropriate qualifications. This course meets that legal requirement and provides delegates with recognised accreditation.

Assessment

Delegates will complete both theory and practical assessments to demonstrate their competence. The theory test, comprises multiple-choice questions, requiring a minimum score of 80% to pass. The practical assessment evaluates the delegate's ability to use detection equipment and apply safe excavation practices effectively. Both components must be passed to achieve certification.

Certification

Successful delegates will have their results submitted to the awarding body, after which they will receive an official certificate and a Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR) card. Certification is valid for five years from the date of training.

To maintain compliance and keep qualifications current, delegates must undertake a reassessment prior to their certificate’s expiry date.
