Overview:

This two-day course is intended for those who have, or are about to acquire, supervisory responsibilities. It provides supervisors with an understanding of health, safety, welfare, and environmental issues, as well as their legal responsibilities relevant to their work activities. It will highlight the requirement to promote Health & Safety to supervise effectively.

This course is endorsed by the United Kingdom Contractors Group UKCG as the standard training for all supervisors working on UKCG sites and, as such, the course must be delivered as laid out in the following programme.

This course is an ideal foundation for obtaining a basic understanding of Health & Safety duties and responsibilities for junior management, and upon successful completion of this course, a natural progression would be the 5-day Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course. Existing Site Managers, Agents, Surveyors and persons holding positions of managerial control should attend the 5-day SMSTS course.

  • The course aims to ensure that all those given supervisory responsibilities understand:

  • Why they are carrying out their identified duties.

  • What is expected of them as a supervisor

  • To ensure that they contribute to the safety of the workplace.

What is the SSSTS Refresher Course by CITB?

The CITB SSSTS Refresher course is for delegates who have previously passed the two day CITB SSSTS course within the last five years and can provide in date proof of successful attendance. Details of the training venue and the date of the course should also be provided if known. Only those individuals who have passed the two-day Site Supervisor course and provided evidence of this will be eligible to attend the refresher training.

This refresher training aims to bring construction health and safety knowledge up to date, as well as giving a thorough overview of the legislative changes and their impact in the workplace. the course will improve awareness of recent development in construction, legislation, health and safety, waste, environmental issues, and measures that support the implementation of responsibilities under new legislation.

CITB SSSTS Refresher Course Content

The SSSTS Refresher course includes a wide range of topics which have been affected by the changes to procedures built upon the material in the original course. The course content will teach individuals to:

  • be aware of their responsibilities under health and safety welfare and environmental issues.

  • be able to implement all relevant legislation which affects them as a supervisor.

  • be more aware of their duties and responsibilities to manage their daily activities.

Each delegate will receive the CITB Mandatory Publications (eBooks for virtual courses and hardcopy for face-to-face courses)

  • Construction site supervision (GE706) 

  • Toolbox talks (GT700)

This training is endorsed by BuildUK.

You gain a highly recognised qualification, which is valid for five years. To remain certified in this area, you will need to retake a course before the expiry date on your certificate, otherwise the full course will need to be retaken.

  • Site set up and security.

  • Fire prevention and control

  • Plant work and equipment

  • Lifting operations and lifting equipment

Module 4

  • Working at height

  • Excavations

  • Underground and overhead services

  • Confined spaces

  • Temporary works

Module 5

  • Environmental awareness

  • Pollution

  • Waste materials

  • Nuisance

Assessment

The examination paper is compulsory and consists of 25 questions, the exam lasts for 30 minutes and covers all aspects of the course.  The examination pass mark is 80% (24 out of 30).

The paper consists of 22 multiple choice questions and three short written questions. There are four safety critical questions in each exam paper. The delegate must answer all four of these questions correctly to pass the exam. The multiple-choice questions are worth 1 point each, whereas written questions can score between 1-3 marks.

Delegates are permitted to use the Construction site supervision (GE706) publication for the last ten minutes of the examination period.

This exam paper must be taken at the end of the course.
