Our SHEA Core course is the essential 1-day, cross-industry health, safety, and environmental awareness programme recognised across the UK utilities sector. Approved by EUSR, it delivers fundamental understanding required for operational site access—whether permanent or temporary.

What is the SHEA Core Course?

The SHEA Core scheme equips employees, supervisors, and managers with baseline safety and environmental knowledge applicable in any utility environment—gas, water, power, waste, and telecommunications. It comprises six core modules:

Workplace responsibilities
Managing environmental impact
Identifying & controlling risks
Common hazards & controls
Occupational health awareness
Emergency response protocols

Course Modules

Understanding our workplace responsibilities	Underpinning legal frameworks, definitions and their application in the workplace setting, including the responsibilities for both the individual (as an employee) and the employer.
Understanding the effects of our work on the working environment	Key environmental considerations in the workplace, and their impact as employees, on the sustainability of their environment.
Identifying and controlling risks	Helps the individual to identify and control risks and hazards and understand their role in preventing them through a range of positive and proactive health and safety behaviours.
Common hazards in the workplace	Develops the ability to both identify a range of common physical hazards and minimise their impact in the workplace, in line with CSCS requirements.
Occupational health hazards	Explains the meaning of the term 'occupational health' and develop the individual's understanding of a range of occupational health hazards and their requirements. It helps individuals identify, mitigate for and minimise occupational health hazards in the workplace.
Responding to emergencies	Develops individuals' understanding of emergency response behaviours, the role of reporting, inspection, and enforcement of health & safety in the workplace. It also develops an individual's understanding of the impact on employee and employer of both poor/improving health and safety in the workplace.

The course will be delivered through the context of the utilities industries in general.

Assessment & Certification

Candidates will be asked a set of multiple choice questions after each module, invigilated per EUSR rules.

Upon successful completion, delegates will be:

Registered on the EUSR database
Issued an EUSR SHEA Core card, valid for 3 years
Recognised for access to utility and contractor sites
The scheme is affiliated with the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) allowing utility workers access to CSCS controlled sites for purposes of utilities work without the need to hold a separate card.

To remain certified in this area, you will need to retake the SHEA Core course before the expiry date on your card.

Prerequisites

There are no formal entry requirements however a basic level of written and spoken English is required.
