Course Overview

This course introduces delegates to the theoretical and practical dangers of working near excavations.  Lots of examples from industry are used throughout the course.

Delegates will become more familiar with how to identify different ground conditions and will come to understand a variety of methods for utilising the appropriate ground retention system(s). Importance is placed on the identification of hazards unique to excavations as well as introducing adequate control measures to reduce risk levels.

Pragmatic have created this course to held our delegates with the learning units in their NCO Water and GAS requirements as well as for wider awareness.

Course Content

• Understand general and specific legislation and guidance pertaining to excavation, construction, and groundworks. Examples are: HASWA 1974, CDM 2015, HSG 150, HSG 47, Work at Height Regs 2015, PUWER 1998, Confined Spaces Regulations 1997, CABWI MUNC07, City and Guilds 6028- 207 and COSVR370 – SQA Unit Code HL5N 04
• Recognise when and why excavation support should be employed and the specific safety and shoring systems to prevent near misses, accidents, injuries and/or fatalities on-site. 
• Distinguish between good and bad practices via increased education in this specialist area.
• Identify ground/soil types and changeable conditions faced on-site, including dealing with water. 
• Carry out or interpret Risk Assessments, Permits & Temporary Works Designs

Assessment

Multiple choice and written questions.

Certificates

Once the delegate has successfully completed the course and assessment, the results will be submitted to the awarding body and cards will be issued to the delegate in due course.

Certification for this course is valid for 3 years from the date of training. To remain certified in this area, you will need to retake the assessment before the expiry date on your card.

Pre-Requisites:

There are no formal entry requirements however a basic level of written and spoken English is required.
