This one-day NRSWA training course is designed for operatives involved in street works who need to set up signing, lighting, and guarding in compliance with the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) 1991. The course provides the necessary skills and knowledge to perform these duties safely and effectively.​

Course Overview

The NRSWA Signing, Lighting and Guarding(Operatives) course (Unit O1) equips delegates with the competencies required to install and maintain temporary traffic management systems on highways. This includes the use of stop/go boards, portable traffic lights, and traffic control signs. The practical component is delivered on a live road to simulate real-world conditions.​

Course Content

By the end of this NRSWA course, operatives will be able to:

• Understand the basic principles of the NRSWA and the standards prescribed by the National Occupational Standards
• Recognise the safety implications of carrying out street works
• Identify conditions that may necessitate special measures
• Select and use appropriate traffic control measures
• Erect and dismantle signing, lighting, and guarding safely in accordance with the Code of Practice
• Operate relevant equipment confidently and correctly

Assessment & Certification

Delegates will undergo both theoretical and practical assessments to evaluate their understanding and skills.

Upon successful completion, results are submitted to the awarding body, and delegates receive a certificate along with a Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR) card, valid for 5 years.​
