This one-day  HSG47 Avoiding Dangers Underground Services - HV Substations Refresher Course (RLP0408) is designed for individuals who have already completed the HSG47 hazardous underground services course. It updates key safety practices around underground utilities and HV substations, ensuring competence aligns with current legislation and site safety protocols.

Course Overview

You’ll revisit and reinforce critical skills including:

• Identifying and mapping underground service layouts
• Safe excavation and substation trench operations
• Managing HV risks — cables, earthing, isolation
• Understanding changes to legal and health & safety regulations
• Emerging technologies in location detection & equipment updates

This course is a prerequisite for several Principal Contractors and nominated roles such as TP137.11 now SR163.11 PCSM.

1. Legislation around underground services
2. How to interpret utility drawings and line search documents
3. Avoiding damage to underground services
4. Detection of underground services using cable avoidance tools (CAT4 & Genny)
5. Understanding of legislation requirements and implications of HSG47
6. Overview of British Standards Institution (BSI) PAS 128:2022 which is the current specification for underground utility detection.
7. Use location equipment to locate underground services in a HV Substation
8. Identify the dangers and hazards associated with underground services in a HV Substation
9. Identify the dangers and hazards associated with overhead lines and services in a HV Substation
10. Understand the dangers of working near or under overhead lines in a HV Substation
11. Understand the risks of making contact with overhead lines during excavations in a HV Substation
12. Understanding of legislation requirements and implications of GS6 in a HV Substation
13. Recap of Impressed Voltages and the impact of these when using a Cat and Genny in a HV Substation
14. Recap of National Grid Safety Distances, Working Procedures and SR163 requirements

Prerequisites

Participants must have completed the NG Person Substations course before enrolling in HSG47 – Avoiding Dangers from Underground Services (HV Substations).

Assessment & Recertification

Delegates will be assessed through a combination of multiple-choice and written questions, along with a practical, on-site assessment to confirm competency.

Upon successful completion, candidates will be re-registered on the EUSR and awarded the Certification will be renewed for a further 3 years.

To maintain active certification, delegates must successfully complete a reassessment prior to the expiry date shown on their card.
