Butt fusion welding is a technique allowing two pieces of thermoplastic pipe to be joined together end-to-end. It involves heating both ends until they soften, before pressing them together with controlled force to make a permanent, extremely strong joint. In essence, this creates a seamless link, as if the pipes had always been a single piece.
The method means that the joint is leak-proof, and it’s popular because it’s extremely reliable. What’s more, it’s flexible enough that it can be used even in pipes with a very large diameter.
So there’s long-term reliability and versatility plus you can expect consistency of quality. What’s more, the process is a cost-effective one.
The pipe ends are cut to be precisely square after they’ve been properly trimmed and cleaned. And once the ends of the pipes have been aligned, they are heated with a hot plate at a particular pressure until they’re soft and pliant. Once they reach a molten state, they’re pressed together quickly before being allowed to cool down under pressure, at which point a molecular bond is created. Pressure must be maintained for a specific period of time to ensure proper bonding of the material, while cooling time also needs to be accurate. Cooling is a vital part of the process since it allows the joint to set, and gives it its full strength.
These days, automated equipment can fully control the process.
This technique is ideal where you need to join a couple of pieces of thermoplastic piping together to create a longer piece or to navigate around a corner.
Butt fusion welding is most often used in pipeline systems across the gas and water industries, as well as in the renewable energy sector plus other industrial applications. It comes into its own in situations where you need a high-quality pipe connection.
This welding process is mainly used for thermoplastic pipes such as polyethylene (PE) or high-density polyethylene (HDPE).
Anyone working on butt fusion welding needs the right training to appreciate the relevant safety procedures and exact techniques required to forge strong, leak-proof plastic pipe joints. You also need to understand the various phases including heating, pressure application and cooling, all of which are critical to weld quality. With all of these elements, if they’re not done properly, it can result in serious problems including pipe failure.
Additionally, with the right training the welder will be able to spot and act on potential issues, operate the specialist equipment safely and produce high-quality welds which meet industry standards.
They’ll also be able to inspect welds visually to check for defects, and be sure the piping is ready for its intended use.
Finally, a welder with the right training can control the heating and cooling process so the weld is consistently strong, reducing the likelihood of joint failures or leaks.
Pragmatic Consulting specialises in bespoke accredited training across the construction and utilities industries. We can equip your teams with the skills and certifications they need, thanks to our flexible solutions.
Our butt fusion welding training is endorsed by EUSR - The Energy & Utility Skills Register (EUSR) or online register of training and skills for the energy and utilities sector. Our two-day version is for those who are new to the process, while those who are experienced or who want refresher training should opt for the one-day course.
Once completed, attendees will be able to, among other things, complete risk assessments, carry out pre-jointing checks, make joints to industry specifications and inspect for and identify joints of an acceptable quality. Assessment includes oral, multi-choice and written questions alongside on-site assessment.
