If you want to work on a construction site in the UK, you’ll usually need a CITB or CSCS card before you can start. Most contractors and site managers require workers to hold one, as it demonstrates understanding of essential health and safety practices.
While people often refer to it as a CITB card, the card issued to workers is actually a CSCS card. To apply for one, you’ll normally need to complete the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test and hold the right qualification for your role.
Before booking your test, many candidates choose to complete a recognised CITB course to make sure they understand the safety principles required to work on site.
A CITB card usually refers to the process of obtaining a CSCS card. The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card proves that workers have the knowledge and qualifications needed to work safely in the construction industry.
To apply for a card, candidates must pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. This test checks your understanding of important safety topics, such as hazards, site procedures and protective equipment.
Although it isn’t legally required, the majority of UK construction sites insist on a valid CSCS card before allowing anyone to work on site. That’s why many workers start by completing CITB health and safety training to gain the necessary qualifications.
The first step is identifying which CSCS card you need. There are four different coloured cards for different roles in the construction industry. They are:
• Green Labourer card
• Blue Skilled Worker card
• Gold Supervisor card
• Black Manager card
The Green Labourer card is often the starting point, especially if you are new to construction. This card shows that you understand basic health and safety principles and are ready to work safely on site. Your experience, qualifications and job role will determine which card is right for you.
Before taking the CITB test, you must pass the Health, Safety and Environment test. This must be done within two years of the CITB test.
Prepare for the Health, Safety and Environment test by completing a CITB Health and Safety Awareness Course at Pragramtic Consulting. This is a one-day, online course designed to provide you with the knowledge required to work safely in construction.
The course will cover:
• Common workplace hazards
• Personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Safe working practices
• Emergency procedures and site rules
Once you’ve completed your training, you can book the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.
The test takes place at an approved centre and is completed on a computer. It includes 50 multiple-choice questions covering a range of construction safety topics.
You’ll need to achieve the required pass mark to get your card, and the test usually takes around 45 minutes to complete.
Once you’ve passed your CITB test, you can apply for your CSCS card - which can be done online. The course price, with Pragmatic Consulting, includes your course registration and CSCS card. To make your application, you’ll need the following:
• Proof that you passed the CITB test
• Evidence of your qualification
• Valid identification
• Payment for the application fee
Once your application is approved, your card will usually arrive within a week.
