Planning to Dig Near Your Boundary? Beware the dangers lurking below the surface

If you're planning to build a boundary wall or fence line, be aware that the process of excavation can quickly lead to unexpected and costly issues.

Beneath your property—and especially near boundaries—there may be a complex network of pipes, cables, and ducts. These utilities can be buried at any depth, and they’re surprisingly easy to strike by accident.

Risks of Damaging Underground Utilities

With electricity and gas underground utilities, the most likely physical injury would be burns but not to mention the costly repair bills. What many people don’t realise is that such damage may not be covered by home insurance, especially if proper checks weren’t made before digging.

Know Where Your Boundary Ends

It is also important to be clear of where your land boundary finishes, and the local authorities starts as you may encroach into the public highway where you do not have permission to excavate. Without permission is not only illegal, it could trigger enforcement action.

Excavating on or Near the Highway

If your work extends into the public highway (even slightly), you must:

• Notify your local authority in advance
• Obtain the necessary permissions and permits
• Use materials that meet the Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways (SROH 4)
• Follow strict standards for layer depths and compaction

Failing to comply can result in penalties, fines, or being held liable for any reinstatement.
