In the construction sector, the term temporary works refers to the engineered solutions which allow permanent structures to be built. They include things such as scaffolding, and are often taken away once the project is complete.
Among those responsible for temporary works, there are two key roles: temporary works coordinator and temporary works supervisor. People often wonder about the difference between the two jobs, so here we look at the duties of each one in a little more detail.
The main responsibility of the TWS is the practical, hands-on supervision of a construction site’s temporary works, and those who work on them, on a day-to-day basis.
A TWS will make sure temporary works are built, maintained and then taken down again in accordance with all the correct design and safety procedures.
A TWS reports regularly to a temporary work coordinator or TWC on how things are going, and will flag up anything they have come across on-site which is potentially a matter of concern.
At the same time, a TWS is responsible for proactively monitoring a construction site for possible dangers and making sure that everyone follows the right safety procedures at all times, and that these are clearly in place.
One of the main ways the role of a TWC differs from that of a TWS in that it has a broader scope. A TWC oversees the whole temporary works process from start to finish, including planning and design, implementation and taking apart of the short-term structures once these are no longer needed.
A TWC is also responsible for managing these works effectively and safely, and they need to liaise with others including designers, contractors and so on. Ultimately, it is also the TWC’s job to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and standards (such as BS 5975-1:2024) and all safety rules and regulations. They should have the power to stop work if does not meet the required standards.
Additionally, the TWC plays a key part in pinpointing and managing the potential hazards associated with temporary works by carrying out a proper risk assessment. Finally, they serve as the main point of contact for all issues associated with temporary works. Read more about the Temporary Works Coordinator Role.
