Course insight: Thursday 31st October
You might have seen our new brand strap-line on LinkedIn - People. Knowledge. Performance. It sums up what we're about, and what we do.
Today we're sharing our knowledge, talking about NERS, GIRS, WIRS, MURS and WIRSAE. We appreciate many of you will know all about these...but it wouldn't be fair to assume everyone does. Our industry loves acronyms!!
NERS, GIRS and WIRS refer to to accreditation schemes and are focused on electricity, gas and water respectively - and are all overseen by something called the Lloyds Register.
NERS stands for National Electricity Registration Scheme and it accredits companies involved in electricity infrastructure services. To become NERS accredited, regular assessments have to be carried out - and if you don't have up to date certification in place, you won't be able to work on the design, construction or commissioning of electrical networks.
GIRS stands for Gas Industry Registration Scheme. It's also overseen by Lloyds Register, but focusses on the delivery of gas infrastructure services.
WIRS which stands for Water Industry Registration Scheme. Any companies which are involved in the design, installing or connection of water supplies will need to have up to date accreditation certificates.
We also mentioned MURS. This is for multi utility providers and stands for Multi Utility Recognition Status. Companies with any two or three of NERS, GIRS and WIRS certification will be added to a register for MURS, but formal accreditation is in addition - and good to have as further peace of mind for your customers.
The last acronym mentioned is WIRSAE which stands for Water Industry Registration Scheme Accredited Entity. WIRSAE accreditation (and subsequent registration), allows WIRSAE Providers to tender for and to carry out for Retailers' water supply disconnections and meter installation/replacement works, relevant to their level of accreditation, as an alternative to the Wholesaler, known as the adopting utility, in whose area the work is being done.
